Kathmandu - The Government of Nepal is set to introduce a comprehensive strategy within the next 15 days aimed at establishing the country as a leading international destination for wellness tourism. The initiative aligns with preparations to celebrate “Nepal Wellness Year 2027,” a national campaign that seeks to promote the country’s rich traditions of Eastern philosophy, meditation, yoga, and natural healing practices on the global stage.
According to the government’s reform-oriented action plan, wellness tourism has been identified as a key pillar for economic transformation. Authorities plan to develop an inter-agency coordination mechanism to ensure effective implementation of programs under the “Wellness Year 2027” framework. The move reflects a broader effort to diversify Nepal’s tourism offerings beyond conventional trekking and mountaineering by tapping into the growing global demand for holistic health and well-being experiences.
The government has also emphasized improving tourism infrastructure and services. Plans include simplifying air services, strengthening aviation safety, and modernizing airport and related infrastructure to enhance accessibility and visitor experience. These measures are expected to support increased international arrivals and facilitate smoother travel for wellness tourists.
In its 100-day action plan, the government has prioritized the identification and expansion of new trekking routes, alongside efforts to integrate under-promoted destinations into mainstream tourism. Feasibility studies are expected to be completed within a month to guide the development of these areas.
Among the locations identified for structured tourism development are the Koshi River corridor in Udayapur, Ramaroshan in Achham, and Badimalika in Bajura. Additionally, trekking routes such as Api and Dordi Himal are set to be developed as organized and sustainable destinations. These regions, known for their natural beauty and cultural significance, are expected to play a crucial role in expanding Nepal’s tourism map.
Experts believe that if effectively implemented, the government’s focus on wellness tourism-combined with infrastructure improvements and destination diversification-could significantly boost Nepal’s tourism sector and contribute to long-term economic growth. The strategy also presents an opportunity to promote sustainable tourism practices while leveraging the country’s unique cultural and natural assets.
