Forests Recognized as Critical Economic Lifelines for Millions at Risk

Kathmandu, Nepal - Forest ecosystems are increasingly being recognized not only for their environmental value but also for their essential role in sustaining livelihoods and local economies, particularly in tropical regions facing high risks of deforestation.
Recent insights highlight that approximately 25 million people living near vulnerable tropical forests depend directly on these ecosystems for their survival. Forests support a wide range of economic activities, including subsistence farming, small-scale businesses, and daily household needs. For many communities, they serve as a primary source of food, fuelwood, and income.
Beyond economic contributions, forests play a vital role in maintaining ecological stability. They regulate water cycles, ensuring access to clean water for both drinking and agriculture. Additionally, forests act as natural barriers against disasters such as floods, landslides, and soil erosion-functions that are increasingly important in the face of climate change.
Experts emphasize that continued deforestation could significantly disrupt these interconnected systems, putting millions at greater economic and environmental risk. Protecting forests, therefore, is not only a conservation priority but also a strategic investment in sustainable development and climate resilience.
In countries like Nepal, where forest-dependent communities form a significant portion of the rural population, strengthening forest governance, promoting community forestry, and supporting sustainable land-use practices are seen as key steps forward.
The message is clear: safeguarding forests is directly linked to building stronger economies and advancing global climate action goals.
