Wetlands Convention Chief Meets International Partners at COP17 to Strengthen Global Conservation Efforts

Yerevan, Armenia - Dr. Musonda Mumba, Secretary General of the Convention on Wetlands, held a working meeting with the Convention’s International Organization Partners (IOPs) during the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) in Armenia, recognising their vital contribution to global wetland conservation and restoration.
The meeting highlighted the importance of collaboration between the Convention and six international non-governmental organizations that support its mission to conserve and promote the sustainable use of wetlands worldwide.
The six International Organization Partners are BirdLife International, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Wetlands International, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), and Wetlands and Wildfowl Trust (WWT).
Four of these organizations-BirdLife International, IUCN, Wetlands International and WWF-have been associated with the Convention since its early years. The formal status of International Organization Partners was confirmed through Resolution VII.3 in 1999. IWMI was added through Resolution IX.16 in 2005, followed by WWT through Resolution XII.3 in 2015.
Their partnership supports international cooperation, scientific knowledge-sharing, policy development and practical action to protect, conserve and restore wetlands, which are essential for biodiversity, water security, climate resilience and sustainable livelihoods.
The engagement at COP17 reaffirmed the importance of collaboration among governments, conservation organizations and other stakeholders in advancing the Convention’s global mission. The meeting also included Honourable Evelyn Ndlovu of Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife.
As countries confront growing environmental pressures, stronger international partnerships remain essential to safeguarding wetlands and the ecological services they provide for people and nature.
