Boom Barrier Temporarily Removed Amid Rising River Flow Concerns

Kathmandu - Authorities and on-ground environmental teams have temporarily moved a floating boom barrier from a section of the river following continuous rainfall and the risk of rising water levels. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure to prevent potential damage to the installed infrastructure.
The boom—typically used to collect floating waste and control river pollution—was seen placed aside along the riverbank, while personnel remained stationed nearby to monitor the situation. A ladder and safety setup indicate that workers had recently accessed the river to secure or adjust the equipment.
With ongoing rain, the river’s flow has become visibly stronger and more turbid, increasing the likelihood that the boom could be dislodged or damaged if left in place. Experts note that such temporary removal is a standard safety protocol during high-flow conditions, especially in urban rivers prone to sudden surges.
Environmental observers stress that while the removal is necessary for safeguarding equipment, it also highlights the vulnerability of river-cleaning interventions during extreme weather. The incident underscores the need for resilient and adaptive waste management systems in river corridors, particularly in rapidly urbanizing areas like Kathmandu.
Authorities are expected to reinstall the boom once water levels stabilize and weather conditions improve.
