Excessive Pesticide Residues Found in Imported Mangoes, Authorities Destroy Consignment to Protect Public Health

Kathmandu, June 8  - A large consignment of mangoes imported from India has been destroyed by authorities after laboratory testing found excessive levels of pesticide residues, raising concerns over food safety and consumer health.
The image shows officials unloading crates of mangoes from a truck and disposing of them in a specially dug pit under the supervision of law enforcement personnel and government representatives. The destruction was carried out after the fruits were deemed unsafe for human consumption due to pesticide contamination.
According to reports from food safety authorities, market monitoring and laboratory analysis detected pesticide residues beyond acceptable limits in the imported mangoes. Officials stated that consuming such fruits could pose serious health risks to the public, prompting immediate action to remove them from the market. Similar actions have previously been taken in Nepal after rapid pesticide residue tests found imported mangoes unfit for consumption.
Authorities emphasized that food safety monitoring has been intensified, particularly during the fruit season when large volumes of imported produce enter Nepal. The concerned agencies have warned traders against selling contaminated food products and have pledged continued surveillance to ensure that fruits and vegetables available in markets meet national safety standards.
Food safety experts note that excessive pesticide residues can adversely affect human health, especially with prolonged exposure. The latest incident highlights the importance of rigorous testing, cross-border quality control, and stronger monitoring mechanisms to safeguard consumers.
The destruction of the contaminated mangoes sends a strong message that public health protection remains a priority and that unsafe agricultural products will not be allowed to reach consumers.
