Upper Mustang Blanketed in Snow as Continuous Snowfall Covers Lomanthang

Mustang, Nepal - The remote trans-Himalayan region of Upper Mustang, including the historic settlement of Lo Manthang, has been covered in a thick layer of snow following continuous snowfall that began Friday afternoon.
The snowfall has transformed the typically arid, high-altitude landscape into a striking winter scene. Homes, agricultural fields, and surrounding hills in Lo Manthang now lie under a blanket of snow, reflecting a sharp shift in weather conditions in one of Nepal’s most unique ecological zones.
Upper Mustang, known for its cold desert climate, receives relatively low annual precipitation compared to other parts of Nepal. However, winter snowfall is not uncommon and plays a crucial role in maintaining local water systems, replenishing moisture for the coming agricultural season, and supporting fragile mountain ecosystems.
Local residents have reported a noticeable drop in temperature alongside the snowfall, raising concerns about mobility, livestock management, and daily life in the isolated region. Snow-covered trails and limited transportation infrastructure can temporarily disrupt connectivity, especially in high-altitude settlements like Lo Manthang.
Despite these challenges, such snowfall events are vital for the region’s environmental balance. Snow accumulation contributes to groundwater recharge and supports downstream water availability, which is essential for both ecosystems and human settlements.
Experts note that while seasonal snowfall remains a natural phenomenon, changing climate patterns could influence the frequency and intensity of such events in the Himalayan region, making continuous monitoring essential.
Authorities have yet to report any major disruptions or emergencies, but locals remain cautious as weather conditions evolve.
