Lalitpur, March 20, 2026 - A national symposium focused on strengthening Nepal’s local water security was successfully held today at Hotel Himalaya, bringing together a diverse group of researchers, policymakers, and development practitioners.
Titled “Transforming Local Water Security: Connecting Research, Action, and Policy,” the event was organized by the Nepal Development Research Institute (NDRI) in collaboration with key national and international partners, including the South Asia Institute of Advanced Studies, The Small Earth Nepal, International Water Management Institute, Nepal Water Conservation Foundation, and Australian National University. The symposium also saw the participation of the Water and Energy Commission Secretariat.
The program was supported by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation through the Muhan Project, reflecting strong international collaboration in addressing Nepal’s water challenges.FB_IMG_1774511041806-1774511091.jpg
Speakers at the symposium emphasized that water security is becoming an increasingly urgent issue for Nepal, particularly in the context of climate change, rapid urbanization, and growing pressure on local water resources. Discussions highlighted the need for integrated approaches that connect scientific research with community-level action and policy frameworks.FB_IMG_1773998721640-1773998747.jpg
Participants shared insights on sustainable water management practices, watershed conservation, and the importance of strengthening local governance systems. There was also a strong focus on translating research findings into practical solutions that can be implemented at the grassroots level.
The symposium served as a platform for dialogue and knowledge exchange, aiming to foster collaboration among stakeholders and promote evidence-based policymaking. Organizers expressed confidence that such engagements will contribute to building a more resilient and water-secure future for Nepal.FB_IMG_1774511047615-1774511091.jpg
