Hidden Climate Guardians: Tree Bark Microbes Found to Absorb Greenhouse Gases

A new scientific study has revealed that trees play a far more complex and powerful role in regulating the Earth’s climate than previously understood-extending beyond their well-known capacity for carbon storage through Photosynthesis.
Published in the prestigious journal Science, the research highlights that tree bark hosts vast communities of microorganisms capable of actively absorbing climate-relevant gases such as methane, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide. These gases, though less discussed than carbon dioxide, significantly contribute to atmospheric warming and chemical imbalances.
The study, conducted across a range of forest ecosystems in Australia, found that these microscopic organisms-living on the outer bark of trees-function as natural biofilters. By consuming greenhouse and trace gases, they help reduce the concentration of harmful compounds in the atmosphere, offering a newly identified pathway through which forests contribute to climate stability.
Importantly, researchers observed that this gas-absorbing capacity is not uniform. It varies depending on tree species, bark characteristics, and environmental conditions such as moisture and temperature. Forests with higher biodiversity and complex structures were found to support more active and diverse microbial communities, enhancing this hidden climate-regulating function.
These findings carry significant implications for global conservation strategies. Protecting old-growth forests and maintaining ecological diversity may now be understood as critical not only for carbon sequestration but also for preserving these microscopic ecosystems that perform essential atmospheric cleansing.
The discovery reinforces the growing scientific consensus that nature-based solutions are more intricate and impactful than previously assumed. As climate challenges intensify, safeguarding forest ecosystems could prove even more vital-down to the smallest organisms living on tree bark.
