Climbers Navigate Iconic Hillary Step in Final Push Toward the Summit of Everest

Kathmandu - A striking scene from high on the world’s tallest mountain shows climbers carefully navigating the narrow ridge near the Hillary Step, one of the most challenging sections just below the summit of Mount Everest.
The image captures a long line of mountaineers ascending the steep and exposed snow ridge at an altitude of approximately 8,790 metres (28,839 feet). This section lies only a short distance below Everest’s 8,848.86-metre summit and has historically been regarded as a crucial obstacle for climbers attempting the final push to the top.
The Hillary Step, located along the southeast ridge route first climbed during the 1953 Mount Everest first ascent, was named after Edmund Hillary, who, together with Tenzing Norgay, successfully reached the summit of Everest for the first time in 1953. Over the decades, this section has become symbolic of the final technical challenge before the summit.
Although the terrain of the Hillary Step reportedly changed following the 2015 Nepal earthquake, it remains a narrow and exposed point where climbers must move carefully using fixed ropes. During peak climbing seasons, congestion can occur here as climbers from multiple expeditions wait for their turn to ascend or descend safely.
The image also reflects the growing scale of mountaineering expeditions on Everest, raising continued discussions among mountaineering communities and environmental experts about safety management, climber traffic, and environmental sustainability in the Himalayan region.
Nepal, home to eight of the world’s fourteen highest mountains, continues to attract climbers from around the globe. However, experts emphasize the need for responsible expedition practices, improved waste management, and stronger monitoring systems to ensure that the fragile high-mountain ecosystem of the Himalayas remains protected for future generations.
