Nepal Launches National Carbon Registry to Enter Global Carbon Markets

Kathmandu - Nepal has taken a significant step toward participating in international carbon markets with the official launch of its National Carbon Registry at Singha Durbar in Kathmandu on Friday. The registry was jointly unveiled by the Minister of Forests and Environment, the Secretary of the Ministry, and the Resident Representative of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Nepal.
The newly launched system will function as Nepal’s central platform for managing carbon credits generated from climate mitigation projects across the country. It will enable the government to track, authorize, issue, and transfer carbon credits in a transparent manner while preventing the risk of double counting.
The development marks a key milestone in Nepal’s implementation of Paris Agreement mechanisms, particularly Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which allows countries to cooperate through international carbon markets to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.
Officials stated that the National Carbon Registry will help connect Nepal’s climate mitigation initiatives with global carbon markets and climate finance opportunities. With the establishment of a national carbon policy framework, governance structure, monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) systems, and now the registry itself, Nepal has laid the institutional and technical foundations required to engage in international carbon trading.
Experts believe the move could unlock new investment opportunities in sectors such as renewable energy, sustainable forestry, nature-based solutions, clean cooking technologies, and climate-smart agriculture. These initiatives are expected to contribute both to emission reductions and to Nepal’s sustainable development goals.FB_IMG_1773404908234-1773413170.jpg
The launch also positions Nepal includes the emerging leaders among Least Developed Countries working to strengthen readiness for international carbon markets and climate finance.
The government and development partners have described the initiative as an important step toward strengthening Nepal’s climate leadership while mobilizing international investment for low-carbon development.
