Kathmandu/Brussels - Europe’s largest conservation network, Natura 2000, is once again drawing global attention as the region intensifies efforts to safeguard nature while supporting sustainable development. The initiative, widely recognized as the world’s largest coordinated network of protected areas, plays a crucial role in conserving biodiversity across the European Union.
Established under the EU’s nature protection framework, Natura 2000 aims not only to protect wildlife and habitats but also to promote a balanced relationship between nature, people, and the economy. Conservation experts emphasize that healthy ecosystems are essential for environmental stability, climate resilience, and human well-being.
The network protects thousands of sites across Europe that are vital for rare species, forests, wetlands, coastal zones, and other critical ecosystems. These areas serve as safe habitats for wildlife while also supporting ecosystem services such as carbon storage, water regulation, and soil protection.
Beyond biodiversity conservation, the initiative contributes to local economies and communities. Protected landscapes within the Natura 2000 network help generate employment opportunities in sectors such as sustainable tourism, conservation management, and ecological restoration. At the same time, they preserve cultural landscapes that reflect centuries of interaction between people and nature.
The European Union has set an ambitious target under its biodiversity strategy: protecting 30 percent of its land area by 2030. However, recent data indicate that progress remains uneven. So far, only nine EU member states have achieved this goal, highlighting the need for accelerated conservation measures across the region.
Environmental advocates stress that expanding protected areas is essential not only for safeguarding wildlife but also for improving public health, strengthening climate resilience, and ensuring sustainable livelihoods.
As global biodiversity continues to face increasing pressure from habitat loss, pollution, and climate change, initiatives like Natura 2000 demonstrate how large-scale conservation networks can support both nature and human societies.
