World Experiences Fifth Warmest February Amid Rising Climate Extremes, Says Copernicus Climate Change Service

Kathmandu - Global temperatures continued their warming trend as the world recorded the fifth warmest February on record, according to the latest monthly climate bulletin released by the Copernicus Climate Change Service, operated by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The report highlights significant regional contrasts in temperature as well as a series of extreme weather events that affected several parts of the world.
According to the analysis, warmer-than-average temperatures were recorded across large regions including the United States, the Middle East, Central Asia, and East Antarctica. In contrast, unusually cold conditions dominated areas such as Alaska, Northern Canada, Greenland, and parts of Northern Russia, demonstrating the uneven distribution of climate patterns during the month.
At the same time, extreme weather events intensified across multiple regions. Heavy rainfall and powerful storms swept across Western Europe and Northern Africa, triggering exceptional flooding that caused widespread damage to infrastructure and disrupted communities. Authorities reported significant loss of life and livelihoods in several flood-affected areas.
Severe flooding was also reported in Australia, Mozambique, and Botswana, where heavy rainfall overwhelmed rivers and urban drainage systems, affecting thousands of residents and damaging homes, agriculture, and transportation networks.
Climate and disaster-risk experts say the increasing frequency and intensity of such events underline the urgent need for stronger early warning systems. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has been advocating the global “Early Warnings for All” initiative, which aims to ensure that every person on Earth is protected by reliable weather and climate warning systems.
Officials at the World Meteorological Organization stress that timely alerts can significantly reduce disaster impacts by enabling governments and communities to prepare for extreme weather events. As climate variability continues to intensify, scientists warn that strengthening early warning systems and climate resilience will be crucial to protecting lives, infrastructure, and national economies worldwide.
