Chittal Spotted Drinking Water at Syali River in Shuklaphanta National Park

Kanchanpur, Nepal - A Chital, commonly known as spotted deer, was recently observed approaching the Syali River inside Shuklaphanta National Park to drink water, highlighting the rich wildlife presence and ecological importance of the protected area in far-western Nepal.
The photograph captures the deer cautiously walking through the shallow waters of the river, surrounded by dry riverbanks and scattered leaves. Such scenes are common during the dry season when wild animals regularly visit rivers, wetlands, and waterholes to quench their thirst and maintain hydration.
Shuklaphanta National Park, one of Nepal’s important conservation landscapes, is well known for its extensive grasslands and diverse wildlife habitats. The park provides a safe refuge for numerous species including spotted deer, swamp deer, wild boar, and several bird species. The availability of natural water sources like the Syali River plays a crucial role in sustaining these wildlife populations, especially during periods of limited rainfall.
Wildlife experts say that sightings of animals near rivers indicate the ecological health of the park’s natural systems. Protected river corridors inside the park help maintain biodiversity while supporting animals that rely on freshwater resources for survival.
The presence of the chittal at the river also reflects the relatively undisturbed habitat within the park, where wildlife continues to follow natural behavior patterns such as feeding, grazing, and visiting water sources.
Conservation authorities emphasize the importance of continued protection of rivers, grasslands, and forests within Shuklaphanta National Park to ensure that species like the spotted deer continue to thrive in Nepal’s protected ecosystems.
