WWF Nepal and Government Partner to Address Human-Tiger Conflict

Kathmandu: WWF Nepal and the Ministry of Forests and Environment have formally signed an agreement to implement the “Managing Human-Tiger Interface in Nepal” project, with financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The initiative aims to reduce escalating human-tiger conflict while strengthening community resilience and conserving critical tiger habitats across Nepal’s key landscapes.
The project comes at a time when Nepal has made global headlines for its success in doubling its wild tiger population. However, conservation experts and local communities have increasingly raised concerns that the recovery of tiger numbers has also led to more frequent encounters between people and big cats, particularly in and around protected areas and forest corridors.
According to officials, the new partnership will focus on improving conflict-prevention measures, supporting affected communities, and promoting coexistence between humans and wildlife. Community-based interventions, early-warning systems, habitat management, and institutional coordination are expected to be central components of the project.
The Ministry of Forests and Environment emphasized that managing human-tiger interactions is critical not only for wildlife protection but also for safeguarding rural livelihoods and human safety. The Ministry of Finance, a key partner in facilitating GEF support, highlighted the project as an example of nature-positive development, where conservation outcomes and community well-being are addressed together.
WWF Nepal stated that the initiative builds on long-standing collaboration with government agencies and local stakeholders, aiming to ensure that conservation success does not come at the cost of human lives or livelihoods. The organization also stressed the importance of science-based planning and local participation in reducing conflict and maintaining ecological balance.
Supported by GEF, the project reflects Nepal’s broader commitment to sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience. Stakeholders involved expressed confidence that coordinated action and shared responsibility will help create a future where both people and tigers can coexist safely.
