Prime Minister Karki Leads Nation in Tribute on Martyrs’ Day in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, Nepal - On the occasion of Martyrs’ Day, Prime Minister Sushila Karki today paid heartfelt tribute to the nation’s martyrs at the Martyrs’ Memorial in Lainchaur, underscoring their enduring legacy and inspiration for Nepal’s democratic journey.
Early Friday morning, Prime Minister Karki arrived at the memorial and placed floral tributes to honor those who laid down their lives for the nation and its people. In her remarks, she emphasized that the courage, sacrifice, and vision of the martyrs continue to serve as a “beacon of inspiration” for present and future generations.
Martyrs’ Day is observed each year in memory of Nepal’s freedom fighters who resisted autocratic rule and fought for democratic rights. Central figures remembered on this day include Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Dasharath Chand Thakur, Gangalal Shrestha, and Shukraraj Shastri - whose sacrifices are deeply etched in the nation’s collective consciousness.
The Government of Nepal has declared Magh 10 to Magh 16 as Martyrs’ Week, during which various commemorative events are held to honor the contributions of martyrs from different historical periods. The main observance falls on Magh 16 of the Nepali calendar.
Historical records show that under the autocratic Rana regime in 1997 BS (1940 CE), these martyrs were executed at different locations in Kathmandu while challenging oppression and demanding civil liberties. Shukraraj Shastri was executed on Magh 10 at Pachali in Teku; Dharma Bhakta Mathema on Magh 13 at Sifal; and both Gangalal Shrestha and Dasharath Chand on Magh 15 at Shobhabhagwati. Their legacy has since become central to Nepal’s democratic traditions.
Since 2012 BS (1956 CE), the Martyrs’ Memorial in Kathmandu has been the focal point for national remembrance, with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City coordinating annual commemorations to honor these heroes and their contributions to the democratic movement.
This year’s observance saw participation from government officials, civil society representatives, students, and citizens, all reaffirming their respect and gratitude for the martyrs’ ultimate sacrifice.
