Climate Change Poses Growing Challenges for Environmental Studies Faculty and Students Worldwide

Kathmandu, Nepal - As the climate crisis accelerates, universities and colleges globally are confronting profound challenges in how they educate and engage future environmental professionals. Faculty members and students within environmental studies programs are navigating barriers ranging from limited resources to gaps in climate expertise - even as student interest in climate solutions continues to rise.
A growing body of academic research shows that climate change education remains unevenly integrated across higher education, with significant institutional constraints slowing progress. According to an international study of universities from more than 45 countries, a lack of funding for climate-related research and inadequate faculty expertise were identified as the two most widespread obstacles to meaningful climate education. Researchers found that roughly 63 % of surveyed institutions cited funding shortages, and more than 50 % pointed to a lack of trained teachers as major challenges in teaching climate change effectively.
These challenges manifest differently in varied contexts. In many universities, faculty are burdened with heavy teaching loads while juggling expectations for climate research, yet often with limited institutional support or specialized training. Without structured professional development, educators find it difficult to keep pace with rapidly evolving climate science and best practices in interdisciplinary teaching.
Despite these obstacles, student interest in climate and sustainability education remains strong and growing. A recent sustainability survey in higher education found that many students are choosing majors and careers influenced by climate concerns, with environmental sciences and climate policy among the most common pathways. This trend reflects a generation increasingly aware of how climate change will shape their personal and professional lives.
However, researchers also note important gaps in practical opportunities for students, such as internships and real-world climate projects, which are essential for translating academic knowledge into action. Many universities still lack systematic connections with community partners and policymakers - a missing link that could deepen students’ engagement with adaptation and mitigation efforts.
Experts say addressing these gaps will require greater funding, stronger institutional leadership, and enhanced training for teachers so that climate science and sustainability principles become core, rather than optional, components of university curricula. As global environmental disruptions - from heatwaves to flooding - increasingly affect education systems, such reforms are becoming urgent.
In South Asia and developing regions, the need is especially pressing. Limited resources and administrative support make it harder for climate education to flourish, even though these regions are among those most vulnerable to climate impacts. Higher education institutions there must find ways to integrate climate knowledge more holistically while empowering both faculty and students to lead locally relevant solutions.
