Five Simple Habits to Improve Sleep Quality This New Year

Kathmandu - As the New Year begins, health experts are encouraging people to prioritise better sleep, highlighting that quality rest plays a crucial role in physical health, mental well-being, and daily productivity.
Sleep specialists note that modern lifestyles-marked by excessive screen time, irregular routines, and high stress-are increasingly disrupting natural sleep patterns. In response, experts recommend a few practical and science-backed habits that can help individuals improve their sleep quality without medical intervention.
One of the most important steps is maintaining consistency. Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, including weekends, helps regulate the body’s internal clock and improves overall sleep efficiency.
Creating a sleep-friendly environment is equally vital. A quiet, dark, and comfortable bedroom with a suitable temperature allows the body to relax naturally and transition into deep sleep more easily.
Health professionals also advise limiting the use of electronic devices before bedtime. The blue light emitted by smartphones, computers, and televisions can interfere with melatonin production, a hormone essential for sleep.
Dietary habits also affect sleep quality. Avoiding heavy meals, caffeine, and alcohol close to bedtime can prevent sleep disturbances and nighttime discomfort.
Regular physical activity during the day is another key factor. Exercise helps reduce stress and supports better sleep, although experts recommend avoiding intense workouts late in the evening.
As people set goals for the New Year, health authorities suggest that improving sleep should be considered a foundation for overall wellness. Small, consistent changes in daily habits, they say, can lead to lasting improvements in sleep and quality of life.
