Mikwakhola, Taplejung - August 3, 2025
Nestled high in the Himalayan folds of northeastern Nepal, Lame Pokhari, located in Loden area of Mikwakhola Rural Municipality-5, Taplejung, is fast emerging as a serene haven for nature lovers and trekkers alike. This pristine alpine lake, tucked away amid emerald hills and rugged peaks, offers a breathtaking spectacle of natural splendor rarely seen even in the Himalayan belt.
Situated at an elevation that offers sweeping views of the surrounding mountain ranges, Lame Pokhari is becoming a highlight of eco-tourism in the region. With its untouched landscape, tranquil environment, and rich biodiversity, the lake draws visitors seeking peace, spiritual retreat, and a connection with unspoiled nature.
“Lame Pokhari is more than just a lake. It’s a sacred space for locals and a natural treasure for visitors. The panoramic vistas, alpine flora, and the crisp mountain air create an unforgettable experience, especially for those who venture beyond commercial trekking routes,” said Kiran Limbu, a local tourism guide from Taplejung.
A Rising Destination Amid Conservation Challenges
Despite its increasing appeal, the route to Lame Pokhari remains relatively untraveled, preserving its ecological integrity. However, locals and environmental advocates caution that growing footfall must be balanced with sustainable tourism practices to protect the fragile alpine ecosystem.
“If managed properly, Lame Pokhari could set an example of how high-altitude destinations can thrive as eco-tourism hubs without compromising environmental values,” added Maya Rai, an environmental science student visiting from Kathmandu.
Currently accessible via moderate trekking routes, the area also holds cultural and spiritual significance for indigenous communities, who regard the lake as a sacred site. Efforts are being made by local authorities and community groups to promote responsible tourism, including proper waste management, trail maintenance, and community-based homestay programs.
A Call for Sustainable Promotion
With Nepal’s far-eastern districts like Taplejung gaining attention for their raw natural beauty, experts suggest that sites like Lame Pokhari deserve more visibility-not just as tourist destinations but as models for climate-conscious exploration.
As the impacts of climate change loom large across Himalayan watersheds, safeguarding such high-altitude lakes becomes more urgent. Lame Pokhari stands today not only as a symbol of natural beauty but also as a reminder of the delicate balance between development and preservation.
