Bhojpur, June 11, 2025 - The Mundum Trail, one of the 100 must-visit tourist destinations designated by the federal government, is being developed as a center for yoga, meditation, and spirituality by the Temkemaiyung Rural Municipality. The municipality has set this goal because it considers the region an exceptionally beautiful and tranquil area in eastern Nepal.
Chairperson of the municipality, Saroj Basnet, stated that the Mundum Trail, a natural gift, is being developed not only as a trekking route but also as a hub for yoga, meditation, research, and spirituality. He emphasized that systematic efforts are being made to promote tourism in the area. The trail's vast grassy plains also offer potential for development as a golf destination, according to Basnet.
“This is a beautiful trail in eastern Nepal,” said Chairperson Basnet. “The area is serene and picturesque. We aim to develop it as a land of meditation. Visitors often report feeling rejuvenated after trekking here.”
In an effort to preserve the natural beauty and tranquility of the trail, the municipality has decided to halt road construction in the area. Highlighting their commitment to maintaining the pristine environment, Basnet mentioned that the area is well-suited for extended stays focused on yoga, meditation, and spiritual practices, and plans are in place to develop it as a peace zone.
Chief Administrative Officer Adit Dahal added that, being the only convenient, simple, peaceful, and beautiful trekking trail in eastern Nepal, plans have been made to expand tourism activities in the region. Dahal noted that the number of visitors has increased significantly in a short time, leading the municipality to prioritize infrastructure development and expansion.
Vice-Chairperson Ramadevi Rai mentioned that Temkemaiyung Rural Municipality, known for its natural beauty, has prioritized tourism and agriculture development. A tourist information center has been established in Chakhewa to serve visitors to the Mundum Trail.
Rai explained that the information center provides details about the trail’s features, geographical conditions, must-visit locations, estimated travel time, accommodation facilities, and ensures the safety and convenience of travelers.
“This trail has recently become a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists,” Vice-Chairperson Rai said. “We are focused on the comprehensive development of the region. There is a plan to develop the trail as a center for spiritual practices. The municipality is working with agriculture and tourism as its main pillars.”
Tourism entrepreneur Vivek Kulung highlighted that the trail offers views of more than two dozen mountain ranges, including Charpate, Myarapic, Nupse, Everest, Lhotse, Lhotsesar, Peak 38, Chamlang, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Kumbhakarna.
The region’s climate, which is neither as cold as the Himalayas nor as hot as the Terai, has made it a favorite among tourists, said Ward Chairperson Purna Prasad Rai of Temkemaiyung–3. He noted that the number of visitors to the trail is increasing every year.
The trail leads to the Silichung Peak, the highest religious and tourist destination in Bhojpur at an altitude of 4,153 meters. Along the trail, various structures reflecting Kirati traditions and culture, expansive grassy plains, and the sight of yaks and sheep herds owned by locals offer tourists a delightful experience.
