Traditional Water Springs in Bajura Drying Up, Raising Concern Over Water Crisis and Environmental Degradation

Bajura, Nepal - Traditional water springs, locally known as naulas, in several parts of Bajura District have started drying up rapidly, creating growing concern among local communities that have depended on these natural water sources for generations.
Residents say the drying of the springs is affecting both people and livestock, particularly in the highland grazing areas where herders spend extended periods with sheep, goats, cows, and buffaloes. According to locals, many of these springs had long served as reliable drinking water sources during seasonal movement to mountain pastures.
Datt Bk of Budhinanda Municipality said the situation has become increasingly difficult as water sources in the upper grazing regions continue to disappear. He explained that herders traditionally relied on the natural springs while staying in the highlands, but the drying of the sources is now creating hardship for both humans and animals.
The problem is reportedly being observed across all nine local levels of the district. Local elders and residents have linked the crisis to unmanaged rural road construction, deforestation, and environmental degradation, which they believe are increasing the risks of floods and landslides while also damaging underground water systems.
Chief of the District Forest Office Bajura, Suresh Chandra DC, stated that unnecessary road expansion and increasing forest destruction in villages are contributing to the gradual depletion of natural water sources.
Environmental experts have repeatedly warned that unplanned infrastructure development in fragile hill and mountain regions can severely impact water recharge systems, biodiversity, and local livelihoods. The drying of traditional springs in Bajura highlights the growing environmental challenges facing rural Himalayan communities amid changing land-use patterns and ecological pressure.
