  • Natural Infrastructure: A Vital Solution for Water Security
Natural Infrastructure: A Vital Solution for Water Security

Ecosphere News Desk 2025-04-03 16:08:00

Kathmandu, March 3, 2025 – As climate change intensifies water-related challenges, natural infrastructure is emerging as a critical tool for enhancing water security. A new study by the World Resources Institute highlights how forests play a crucial role in maintaining clean and reliable water supplies.

Forests contribute to water security through key processes such as evapotranspiration, interception, infiltration, and soil stabilization. These mechanisms help regulate precipitation, reduce soil erosion, improve groundwater recharge, and prevent flooding.

According to experts, forest degradation and deforestation threaten these natural benefits, increasing the risks of water scarcity and extreme weather events. By preserving and restoring forest ecosystems, communities can improve water quality and availability while reducing the risks of droughts and floods.

This research underscores the urgent need for integrating natural infrastructure into water management policies. Governments, businesses, and communities must invest in forest conservation to ensure a sustainable water future.
