Shanghai's Tiered Lawn Redefines Urban Break Spaces for Office Workers

Shanghai has taken urban green spaces to the next level with the introduction of a tiered lawn that serves as a tranquil oasis for office workers during their breaks. Located in the bustling Xuhui District near Yunjin Road metro station, this innovative lawn is part of Runway Park, a redevelopment project launched in 2012 to bring fresh air and greenery to the cityscape.

Designed by the U.S.-based architectural firm Sasaki, the lawn features a carefully planned structure with gentle slopes that mimic the comfort of lounge chairs. Each tier measures approximately 1.05 meters in width and 0.55 meters in height—dimensions selected through extensive testing to ensure optimal comfort. The gentle incline, set at a precise 135-degree angle, has proven ideal for those looking to enjoy their lunch, relax with a book, or even take a quick nap amidst nature.

Adding to its appeal, the lawn is shaded by strategically planted trees, offering respite from Shanghai's urban heat and noise. Its ergonomic design and serene environment have quickly made it a favorite destination for office workers, creating a new standard for city parks globally.

However, the park’s growing popularity has sparked concerns over its sustainability. The tiered lawn is experiencing high foot traffic, which some fear may lead to the deterioration of its lush grass and overall aesthetics. Regular visitors have expressed hopes that proper maintenance measures will be implemented to preserve the lawn’s charm and functionality.

The success of this innovative project has not gone unnoticed. Social media platforms have buzzed with admiration for the tiered lawn, with calls for similar projects to be replicated in other urban areas. Advocates say such spaces are essential in promoting mental well-being and fostering a stronger connection between city dwellers and nature.

Runway Park's tiered lawn is more than a simple patch of grass—it is a visionary step forward in urban planning, offering a blend of practicality, sustainability, and aesthetic appeal that inspires cities worldwide to rethink their approach to green spaces.

This project embodies Shanghai's commitment to creating livable urban environments and highlights the growing importance of integrating nature into modern cityscapes. For city planners and environmentalists, the tiered lawn offers a blueprint for the future—a reminder that even small changes in design can significantly enhance quality of life.

Ecosphere News continues to bring attention to such innovative urban projects that aim to strike a balance between development and sustainability. Stay connected for more stories like this that reshape our cities and inspire a healthier future.
