Dramatic Weather Shifts in Kathmandu Valley Raise Concerns Over Climate Resilience

Bhaktapur, January 27, 2025
Kathmandu Valley is witnessing an unusual and dramatic change in weather patterns compared to the same period last year. The daytime now brings hazy sunshine accompanied by an intense heat that resembles midsummer conditions, while evenings and nights are marked by a sharp drop in temperature, leaving the air cold and crisp.photo--1737983754.jpg

This erratic fluctuation has posed significant challenges for people, particularly those who spend long hours outdoors. The weather shifts not only test physical endurance but also create health risks, such as respiratory issues, heat stress during the day, and chills during the night. Vulnerable populations, including outdoor workers, street vendors, and the homeless, are finding it increasingly difficult to cope with the fluctuating conditions.

Environmental experts attribute these abrupt weather changes to a combination of climate variability and the ongoing urbanization of the valley. Kathmandu Valley has been experiencing heightened air pollution levels, which contribute to the hazy atmosphere. Additionally, global climate change has intensified extreme weather events, disrupting established seasonal patterns.

“The current weather conditions highlight the fragile relationship between humans and the environment. Such rapid and extreme changes strain the body, especially for those without adequate shelter or access to proper clothing,” said a climate scientist from Tribhuvan University.

These shifts also underscore the urgent need for climate resilience strategies in Nepal. Ensuring adequate protection for vulnerable populations, creating awareness about weather adaptability, and addressing root causes such as urban pollution and global climate change are key measures.

As Kathmandu Valley continues to adapt to these changing patterns, the phenomenon serves as a reminder of humanity’s dependency on a stable environment—and the potential consequences when that stability is disrupted.

Ecosphere News will continue to monitor and report on the evolving relationship between the environment and its impact on daily life.
