Rasuwa, Nepal - Health authorities have reported growing concerns over communicable diseases among people displaced by the devastating Rasuwa floods, with 81 people staying at different holding centres developing diarrhoea in recent weeks.
According to the Ministry of Health and Food Safety, the risk of infection has increased in temporary shelters because of inadequate drinking water and sanitation facilities, limited access to proper toilets and overcrowding. Health officials have cautioned that such conditions can increase the transmission of water- and sanitation-related diseases among vulnerable flood-affected communities.
Some flood survivors staying at Shivalaya Basic School in Uttargaya Rural Municipality have also developed fever. Local reports indicate that a ward chairperson experiencing health problems was transported to Kathmandu by helicopter for further treatment.
The situation highlights a growing public-health challenge following the disaster. Beyond immediate rescue and relief, authorities face the urgent task of ensuring safe drinking water, functioning toilets, hygiene supplies, waste management and adequate space in temporary settlements.
Health experts have warned that contaminated water and food following floods can increase the risk of diarrhoeal diseases and other infections. Maintaining safe water supplies and sanitation, together with early detection and treatment, is therefore critical to preventing a wider outbreak.
