Nepal Issues National Action Plan to Prevent and Control Snakebite Deaths and Disabilities

Kathmandu, Nepal - The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has issued the “National Preparedness and Response Action Plan on Snakebite Prevention and Control, 2083”, aiming to prevent and control deaths and disabilities caused by snakebites and reduce the associated economic and social losses.
According to the action plan, responsible and supporting agencies have been assigned various activities, with defined timelines, to reduce the risk of snakebites and improve the chances of survival when snakebite incidents occur.
The plan also outlines measures to minimize snakebite risks, life-saving actions following a snakebite, things that should and should not be done after a snakebite, and appropriate responses when snakes are encountered.
NDRRMA has highlighted the growing interaction between people and snakes amid climate change, unplanned urbanization, encroachment on agricultural land, and changes in biodiversity. Such environmental and land-use changes can increase opportunities for human-snake encounters and contribute to snakebite risks.
The national action plan is intended to strengthen preparedness, response and coordination among relevant authorities while improving public awareness and reducing preventable deaths and disabilities from snakebites.
The official action plan is available through NDRRMA’s website: NDRRMA - National Snakebite Prevention and Control Action Plan, 2083
