Greenland - Greenland’s rapidly changing marine environment is drawing increasing numbers of giant whales into waters where some species were once only occasional visitors, offering a striking example of how climate change is reshaping Arctic ecosystems.
New research on East Greenland has documented substantial numbers of fin, humpback and minke whales feeding along the coast, with their distribution extending northward into areas that have historically been less important for these species.
Researchers estimate that East Greenland’s waters may now support approximately 4,000 humpback whales, 6,000 fin whales and 4,500 minke whales during the seasonal feeding period. The findings are based on comparisons of marine surveys conducted in 2015 and 2024.
Scientists say the expansion is closely associated with major changes in the Arctic marine environment. Sea-surface temperatures in East Greenland have risen by about 1°C since a pronounced warming shift in the late 1990s, while summer sea ice has declined considerably since around 2000.
But disappearing ice is not directly “calling” the whales north. Instead, climate-driven changes in the ocean are also changing where their food is found.
One important example is capelin, a small Arctic fish that plays a critical role in the region’s food web. Researchers have observed changes in the distribution of capelin, including a northward shift toward East Greenland. The increased availability of prey appears to be creating new feeding opportunities for large baleen whales.
The scale of the change is enormous. Scientists estimate that fin, humpback and minke whales collectively consume around one million tonnes of prey during their approximately four-month seasonal presence in East Greenland.
The phenomenon is part of a broader ecological process often described as “borealization” of the Arctic, in which species associated with warmer, sub-Arctic waters expand northward as the Arctic becomes warmer.
However, scientists caution that the arrival of more whales should not automatically be interpreted as a positive consequence of climate change.
For species that depend heavily on cold, ice-associated habitats, the loss of sea ice can create serious challenges. Recent research on bowhead whales in the East Greenland–Svalbard–Barents Sea region highlights the importance of sea-ice environments to the endangered population. Declining ice could also increase the animals’ exposure to shipping and other human activities as previously inaccessible Arctic waters become easier to navigate.
Research on narwhals in northwest Greenland likewise indicates that their movements are strongly linked to sea-ice conditions. Their behavior and habitat use could change substantially as the duration and extent of sea ice continue to decline.
The emerging picture is therefore more complicated than simply “more whales in Greenland.”
Warming waters, disappearing sea ice and shifting prey are reorganizing the Arctic food web. Some species are finding new feeding opportunities and expanding northward, while highly specialized Arctic species may lose habitats they have depended on for generations.
Greenland’s waters are becoming a living laboratory for observing this transformation in real time. What happens there could provide an important warning of how continued warming may reshape marine ecosystems across the wider Arctic.
For conservationists and researchers, the challenge now is to understand these rapidly changing ecological relationships before further warming, increased shipping and human activity create new pressures on an already vulnerable Arctic ecosystem.
