Kathmandu: Global progress on water and sanitation is delivering benefits far beyond SDG 6, strengthening health, food security, energy, climate resilience, ecosystems and economic development, according to the United Nations SDG 6 Synthesis Report on Water and Sanitation 2026.
The report highlights water as an increasingly important “superconnector” capable of accelerating progress across the Sustainable Development Goals and supporting broader transformation for people, planet and prosperity.
After a decade of SDG 6 implementation, countries have achieved measurable progress. Billions more people have gained access to safer drinking water, sanitation and hygiene services, while water-use efficiency has improved and more countries are applying integrated water resources management to balance competing demands.
However, progress remains too slow and uneven to meet global ambitions. The report stresses an urgent need to move from incremental improvements towards transformative action, supported by stronger financing, effective institutions, innovation, improved implementation and deeper international cooperation.
According to the report, a dedicated global goal for water and sanitation has helped elevate water as a political priority, shape national policies, strengthen data and monitoring, and improve coordination across sectors and stakeholders.
Water security is also deeply interconnected with public health, food production, clean energy, human rights, climate action and ecosystem protection. Accelerating SDG 6, therefore, can generate wider benefits across the global sustainable development agenda.
The UN report calls for stronger resourcing, sharper execution and broader partnerships as the world approaches 2030. It also highlights the need for a stronger multilateral approach to water and sanitation beyond the current Sustainable Development Goals framework.
The SDG 6 Synthesis Report 2026 serves as a key United Nations contribution to the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development's in-depth review of SDG 6.
As climate change, water stress and growing development pressures intensify worldwide, the report delivers a clear message: sustainable water and sanitation management is not an isolated development objective-it is a foundation for resilient societies, healthy ecosystems and sustainable economies.
