World Drug Week: UNDP Calls for Early Detection, Compassion, and Support in Addressing Drug Use

Kathmandu, Nepal - As Nepal observes World Drug Week, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has emphasized the importance of recognizing the early signs of drug use and fostering a supportive environment to help individuals seek timely assistance and recovery.
According to UNDP, identifying warning signs at an early stage can play a crucial role in preventing substance abuse from escalating and can significantly improve the chances of successful rehabilitation. Behavioral changes such as sudden social isolation, increased secrecy, unusual changes in appetite, and unexplained anger or irritability may indicate that an individual is struggling and requires support.
UNDP stated that these signs should not be dismissed as temporary phases, particularly among young people and vulnerable groups. Instead, families, communities, educators, and peers are encouraged to remain attentive and engage in open, non-judgmental conversations when concerns arise.
The organization highlighted that compassion and understanding are more effective than stigma and punishment in helping individuals affected by drug-related challenges. By creating safe spaces for dialogue and encouraging people to seek help without fear of discrimination, communities can contribute to reducing the social and health impacts of drug use.
UNDP also reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside the Government of Nepal and development partners to strengthen awareness campaigns, share knowledge, and support initiatives aimed at preventing drug abuse and promoting mental well-being.
As World Drug Week is marked across the country, experts continue to stress that early intervention, community support, and accessible treatment services remain essential components in addressing substance use disorders and protecting public health.
