AI-Powered Child Growth Monitoring Tool Shows Promise in Early Detection of Malnutrition

Kathmandu, June 24 - A multi-stakeholder workshop held in Kathmandu has highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in strengthening child nutrition monitoring and addressing malnutrition in Nepal, particularly in rural and underserved communities.
The workshop, organized by the Local Initiatives for Biodiversity, Research and Development (LI-BIRD) in collaboration with WHH Nepal (Welthungerhilfe) on June 23 at Hotel Himalaya, brought together representatives from government agencies, development partners, academic institutions, and digital health experts to review findings from a study on the Child Growth Monitor (CGM) application.
The CGM is an AI-enabled digital tool designed for contactless child growth monitoring. According to the study findings presented during the event, a total of 2,107 children were scanned using the application. The results demonstrated high measurement accuracy and indicated strong potential for the early detection of child malnutrition, a critical public health concern in Nepal and many developing countries.
Participants discussed the opportunities and challenges associated with integrating innovative digital technologies into existing health and nutrition systems. Deliberations focused on generating evidence for wider adoption, strengthening system integration, and exploring pathways for scaling up the technology to improve access to nutrition services, particularly in remote and marginalized communities.
Experts at the workshop emphasized that digital innovations such as the CGM could support timely identification of growth-related concerns among children, enabling earlier interventions and contributing to improved health outcomes. They also highlighted the importance of collaboration among government institutions, development organizations, researchers, and technology experts to ensure that such tools are effectively implemented and accessible to those who need them most.
The workshop concluded with a shared commitment among stakeholders to continue exploring innovative approaches that can strengthen child nutrition monitoring and contribute to Nepal's efforts toward achieving better health and nutrition outcomes for all children.
