Kanchanpur, Nepal: The vast grasslands of Shuklaphanta National Park in far-western Nepal continue to serve as a vital habitat for the endangered barasingha (swamp deer), one of the country's most iconic wildlife species.
Located approximately 24 kilometers south of the park’s main headquarters at Majhgau, the Shuklaphanta grassland is recognized as the largest grassland ecosystem in Nepal. Spanning around 34 square kilometers, the area is renowned for supporting the world’s largest herd of barasingha observed in a natural grazing environment.
The expansive grassland, characterized by rich biodiversity and open landscapes, has become a major attraction for domestic and international visitors seeking to experience Nepal’s unique wildlife. The sight of large herds of barasingha grazing across the plains remains one of the most celebrated wildlife spectacles in the country.
According to the barasingha census conducted in 2081 B.S. (2024/25), a total of 2,182 barasingha were recorded within the park. The population figure reflects the significant conservation achievements made through habitat management, anti-poaching efforts, and the protection of critical grassland ecosystems inside Shuklaphanta National Park.
Conservationists consider the park a global stronghold for the species, highlighting the importance of continued habitat preservation and sustainable wildlife management. The healthy population of barasingha not only demonstrates the ecological value of Shuklaphanta’s grasslands but also underscores Nepal’s growing success in wildlife conservation.
As pressure on natural habitats increases across South Asia, Shuklaphanta National Park stands as an important example of how protected areas can contribute to the recovery and long-term survival of vulnerable wildlife species while supporting nature-based tourism and environmental awareness.
