Nepal Government Approves Montreal Protocol Implementation Agreement to Strengthen Ozone Layer Protection

Kathmandu, June 2, 2026 - The Government of Nepal has decided to approve the implementation agreement of the Montreal Protocol under the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), aimed at managing and reducing substances that deplete the ozone layer.
The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday afternoon at Singha Durbar. According to Minister for Education and Sports and Government Spokesperson Sasmit Pokharel, the government has moved forward with the important agreement as part of its commitment to environmental protection and the preservation of the Earth's ozone layer.
The Montreal Protocol, adopted in 1987, is widely recognized as one of the most successful international environmental agreements. It seeks to phase out the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances, including chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other harmful chemicals that damage the stratospheric ozone layer.
Experts regard the protocol as a landmark global effort that has significantly reduced ozone-depleting substances worldwide and contributed to the gradual recovery of the ozone layer. Scientific assessments indicate that continued implementation of the protocol could help restore ozone levels to pre-1980 conditions over the coming decades.
Nepal's approval of the implementation agreement is expected to strengthen national efforts to comply with international environmental obligations, promote the adoption of ozone-friendly technologies, and support broader climate and environmental protection goals.
Environmental advocates have welcomed the move, noting that effective management of ozone-depleting substances not only safeguards the ozone layer but also contributes to protecting human health, ecosystems, and sustainable development.
