Hottest Year on Record Likely Before 2030, UN Warns Amid Rising Global Heatwaves

Kathmandu, May 28 - The United Nations’ World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has warned that the world is highly likely to witness the hottest year ever recorded before the end of 2030, as global temperatures continue to rise due to climate change and greenhouse gas emissions.
According to the latest climate outlook released by the WMO, there is an 86 percent chance that at least one year between 2026 and 2030 will surpass 2024 as the warmest year in recorded history. Scientists have also projected a strong possibility that average global temperatures during the coming years will remain more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, a critical threshold linked to the Paris Climate Agreement.
The warning comes as several parts of Western Europe are already experiencing unusually early and intense heatwaves. Countries including Spain, France, and the United Kingdom have reported temperatures far above seasonal averages, with some regions recording heat levels normally expected during peak summer months.
Climate experts say the increasing frequency of extreme weather events-including heatwaves, droughts, floods, wildfires, and glacier loss-is closely connected to continued fossil fuel consumption and rising carbon emissions worldwide. The WMO further warned that Arctic regions are warming at a much faster rate than the global average, raising concerns about accelerating ice melt and rising sea levels.
Scientists have also indicated that a possible return of the El Niño weather phenomenon in the coming years could further intensify global temperatures and climate-related disasters.
United Nations climate officials have urged governments across the world to strengthen climate action, expand renewable energy investment, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to limit the long-term impacts of global warming.
Environmental analysts warn that developing countries, including Nepal, remain highly vulnerable to climate-related disasters such as erratic rainfall, glacial lake outburst floods, landslides, water shortages, and agricultural losses caused by changing weather patterns.
