Scientists Identify Hidden Accelerant in Antarctic Ice Loss

Kathmandu - A new scientific study has revealed that Antarctica’s ice loss may be accelerating faster than previously estimated due to a hidden ocean-driven feedback mechanism beneath floating ice shelves. The research highlights how warm ocean water interacting with melting glaciers can intensify further melting, creating a dangerous self-reinforcing cycle that could significantly contribute to global sea-level rise.
According to the study led by researchers from the University of Maryland and published in Nature Geoscience, meltwater flowing from Antarctic ice shelves changes the structure and circulation of surrounding ocean water. Normally, cold and dense water near the ocean floor acts as a protective barrier, preventing warmer deep-ocean currents from reaching the underside of glaciers. However, as freshwater from melting ice enters the ocean, this barrier weakens, allowing warm water to move underneath floating glaciers and accelerate melting from below.
Scientists describe this as a “positive feedback loop,” where increased melting allows more warm water intrusion, which then causes even more ice loss. The study warns that many existing climate models and global sea-level projections may underestimate future risks because they do not fully include these complex meltwater-ocean interactions.
The findings are particularly important for regions such as the Weddell Sea, where researchers observed that weakening cold-water barriers could sharply intensify glacier melt. Meanwhile, some areas near the West Antarctic Peninsula and the Amundsen Sea may temporarily experience limited protection due to freshwater barriers formed by upstream melting. However, scientists caution that this temporary effect still results from severe ice loss occurring elsewhere in Antarctica.
Experts warn that continued greenhouse gas emissions and warming oceans could push parts of Antarctica closer to irreversible tipping points. Rising Antarctic ice melt threatens hundreds of millions of people living in low-lying coastal areas worldwide through stronger storm surges, coastal flooding, and long-term sea-level rise. 
The study also reinforces growing scientific concern that hidden ocean processes beneath Antarctic ice shelves are playing a much larger role in climate change than previously understood. Researchers are now developing higher-resolution climate simulations to better identify which ice shelves are most vulnerable in the coming decades.
