Tunley Environmental has published a new guide titled A Guide to Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), aimed at helping organisations better understand the growing importance of verified environmental product data in regulatory compliance and commercial decision-making.
The sustainability consultancy stated that the guide was developed in response to increasing global pressure on businesses to provide transparent and credible information regarding the environmental impact of products throughout their lifecycle. The publication is particularly targeted at organisations operating in sectors such as manufacturing, construction, and infrastructure.
According to Tunley Environmental, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are becoming increasingly important tools for demonstrating sustainability performance, meeting international regulatory expectations, and strengthening market competitiveness.
Commenting on the launch, Dr Gareth Davies noted that EPDs are rapidly emerging as a key component of transparent environmental reporting and sustainable business strategy. He added that the guide is intended to help organisations understand how EPDs can support both compliance obligations and commercial outcomes.
The guide highlights the growing adoption of EPDs globally. Data from The International EPD System indicates that more than 9,000 EPDs were published in 2025 alone. These declarations are increasingly being used to support sustainability reporting and certification frameworks such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), BREEAM, and LEED.
The publication also explains the differences between EPDs, Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs), and product carbon footprint calculations. It outlines how organisations can interpret lifecycle environmental data, understand system boundaries and environmental indicators, and comply with international standards including ISO 14025 and EN 15804.
Furthermore, the guide provides insights into the full EPD development process, from data collection and environmental analysis to independent third-party verification. It also explores how organisations can use EPDs to improve tender competitiveness, strengthen ESG reporting practices, and differentiate products in increasingly sustainability-focused markets.
