Australia Supports Sustainable Large Cardamom Value Chain Development in Nepal

The Australian Embassy in Nepal has expressed support for efforts aimed at strengthening Nepal’s large cardamom value chain through collaboration with the Nepal Development Research Institute (NDRI). The initiative focuses on improving outcomes for farmers by promoting sustainable cultivation practices and enhancing the overall production and market system of large cardamom in Chainpur Municipality.
In a recent social media post, the Australian Embassy highlighted Nepal’s global significance in large cardamom production, noting that the country contributes more than half of the world’s total supply. The embassy stated that supporting sustainable agriculture and resilient value chains can help improve livelihoods for farming communities while also ensuring environmental sustainability.
Large cardamom is one of Nepal’s major cash crops and an important export commodity, particularly in the eastern hilly regions. Farmers involved in the sector often face challenges related to production techniques, market access, climate impacts, and value addition. Efforts to strengthen the value chain are expected to support better income opportunities, improved farming practices, and long-term agricultural sustainability.
The collaboration with NDRI and local stakeholders in Chainpur Municipality is seen as part of broader efforts to encourage sustainable rural development and climate-resilient agriculture in Nepal.
