  • Australia Faces Growing Concerns Over Unregulated ‘Eco-Friendly’ Food Claims
Australia Faces Growing Concerns Over Unregulated ‘Eco-Friendly’ Food Claims

Australia’s growing use of sustainability-related food labels such as “natural,” “vegan,” and “eco-friendly” is facing increasing scrutiny after new research revealed that many environmental claims on packaged foods are largely unregulated and often unsupported by independent verification.
Recent studies conducted by researchers from The George Institute for Global Health found that a significant portion of packaged food products sold in major Australian supermarkets carry environmental or sustainability-related claims, despite the absence of clear national regulatory standards governing such terminology.
The research examined more than 27,000 packaged food products across major retailers including Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, IGA, and Harris Farm. Researchers discovered that nearly 40 percent of products displayed at least one sustainability-related claim, while the majority of those claims were self-declared by manufacturers without third-party certification.
According to the findings, commonly used marketing terms such as “natural,” “green,” “eco-friendly,” and “sustainable” currently lack precise legal definitions under Australian food regulations. Experts warn that this regulatory gap may contribute to “greenwashing,” where companies present products as environmentally responsible without sufficient scientific evidence to support those claims.
Researchers also analyzed climate-related claims linked to food products and found inconsistencies between labeling and actual environmental impact. In some high-emission categories, including meat and confectionery products, items marketed as environmentally friendly were found to have carbon footprints comparable to or even higher than products without such claims.
Environmental and public health experts are now urging Australian authorities to introduce stricter rules for sustainability labeling, including standardized definitions, mandatory evidence requirements, and independent certification systems. Some experts have pointed to international models such as France’s Eco-Score system as potential examples for improving transparency in food labeling.
The issue reflects a broader global debate over environmental marketing practices as consumers increasingly seek sustainable purchasing options. Analysts warn that misleading sustainability claims may weaken public trust and hinder genuine environmental progress in the food industry.
The studies were published in the scientific journals Public Health Nutrition and Cleaner and Responsible Consumption.
