Bonn, Germany - In a significant step toward strengthening global environmental governance, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) European Regional Office, in collaboration with the Global Landscapes Forum and CIFOR-ICRAF, convened more than 30 environmental organizations in Bonn to prepare for the upcoming “triple COP” year in 2026.
The meeting brought together stakeholders working across climate change, biodiversity conservation, and land degradation-three interconnected global challenges that are expected to dominate international negotiations in the coming year.
Aligning for a Critical Global Year
The year 2026 is anticipated to host three major United Nations environmental conferences under the Rio Conventions: the climate COP under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the biodiversity COP under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the land-focused COP under the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
Participants in Bonn emphasized that these processes have historically operated in silos, often resulting in fragmented policies and limited on-the-ground impact. The 2026 “triple COP” year is now being viewed as an opportunity to foster policy coherence and integrated action across the three agendas.
Focus on Integration and Implementation
Discussions during the convening centered on bridging gaps between global commitments and local implementation. Key priorities included:
Promoting nature-based solutions that address climate mitigation, biodiversity protection, and land restoration simultaneously
Enhancing coordination among institutions and policy frameworks
Mobilizing aligned financing mechanisms to support cross-sectoral environmental action
Advancing a landscape approach, integrating forests, agriculture, and ecosystems into unified planning systems
Organizers highlighted the importance of moving “from dialogue to action,” stressing that upcoming COP negotiations must deliver not only ambitious targets but also practical pathways for implementation.
Strengthening Global Collaboration
The Global Landscapes Forum and CIFOR-ICRAF played a key role in facilitating knowledge exchange, drawing on research and field-based experience in sustainable land management and restoration.
Meanwhile, the International Union for Conservation of Nature underscored its ongoing efforts to shape a coordinated global conservation agenda under its forthcoming programme cycle, aligning biodiversity goals with climate and development priorities.
A Defining Moment for Global Environmental Action
Experts at the Bonn meeting described 2026 as a potential turning point. With accelerating climate risks, biodiversity loss, and land degradation, there is growing recognition that isolated solutions are no longer sufficient.
The convening concluded with a shared understanding that stronger collaboration between governments, scientific bodies, and civil society will be essential to achieving meaningful outcomes at the upcoming COPs.
As the world moves closer to the triple COP year, initiatives like the Bonn dialogue signal a shift toward integrated, action-oriented environmental governance, aimed at delivering tangible results for people, nature, and the planet.
