Community-Led Initiative Targets Invasive Alien Plant Species in Yangjakot

Yangjakot, Nepal - A community-driven program focusing on the removal and management of invasive alien plant species was successfully conducted in Yangjakot, bringing together local residents, stakeholders, and conservation partners in a coordinated effort to protect local ecosystems.
The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the growing threat posed by invasive alien plant species, which are increasingly affecting biodiversity, agricultural productivity, and the ecological balance of the region. Participants were sensitized to how such species outcompete native vegetation, degrade soil quality, and disrupt natural habitats.
As part of the program, experts and community members collaborated to identify major invasive plant species prevalent in the area. This was followed by hands-on activities, where participants actively engaged in removing invasive plants from nearby forests, agricultural lands, and public spaces. The practical approach helped enhance local understanding of both the scale of the problem and the effort required to address it.
In addition, the program demonstrated effective management techniques, including safe handling, disposal, and composting of removed plant materials. These methods are considered essential to prevent regrowth and ensure long-term ecological benefits.FB_IMG_1777584864540-1777586634.jpg
The event reflects a growing recognition of the importance of community participation in environmental conservation. By combining awareness, technical knowledge, and local action, such initiatives contribute significantly to sustaining biodiversity and strengthening ecosystem resilience in rural Nepal.
