UNDP Nepal and Japan Launch Climate Resilience Project in Dhangadhi

Dhangadhi, Nepal - A new initiative aimed at strengthening urban resilience to climate change has been launched in Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City, marking a collaborative effort between the United Nations Development Programme Nepal and the Japan Government.
The project, titled “Smart Buildings and Green Infrastructure,” was officially introduced in the presence of Maeda Toru, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal, and Kyoko Yokosuka, Resident Representative of UNDP Nepal.
Targeting the rapidly urbanizing Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City, the initiative focuses on reducing the growing risks posed by rising temperatures and climate change. Key components of the project include thermal retrofitting of public buildings, upgrading community infrastructure, restoration of urban wetlands, and the promotion of nature-based cooling solutions.
According to project stakeholders, these interventions are designed to address the intensifying impacts of urban heat, particularly on vulnerable populations, by improving energy efficiency and enhancing natural ecosystems within the city. The restoration of wetlands is expected to play a crucial role in regulating urban temperatures while also supporting biodiversity and water management.
The initiative aligns with broader global efforts under the framework of human security and sustainable urban development, aiming to safeguard communities from climate-induced hazards while improving overall quality of life.
Officials emphasized that the project represents a practical step toward building climate-resilient cities in Nepal, especially in regions experiencing rapid urban expansion and increasing exposure to extreme heat.
As climate risks continue to escalate, collaborative initiatives such as this highlight the importance of international partnerships in delivering localized, sustainable solutions for urban resilience.
