Beyond the Degree: Technical Education Gains Momentum Among SEE Graduates in Nepal

Kathmandu - As thousands of students complete their Secondary Education Examination (SEE) each year, a growing number are exploring alternatives to traditional academic pathways. The Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) is increasingly emerging as a practical and career-oriented option for youth seeking employment-focused education.
CTEVT, Nepal’s leading technical and vocational education body, has been expanding access to skill-based programs designed to align with labor market demands both domestically and internationally. Its courses span diverse sectors including engineering, nursing, agriculture, information and communication technology (ICT), and hospitality-fields that are directly linked to employment opportunities.
A key feature of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) under CTEVT is its emphasis on hands-on learning. Students are required to participate in practical sessions and On-the-Job Training (OJT), allowing them to gain real-world experience before entering the workforce. Education experts note that such experiential learning helps bridge the gap between academic knowledge and industry requirements, a challenge often seen in purely theoretical education systems.
Affordability remains another factor contributing to the appeal of CTEVT programs. Compared to many private academic institutions, technical education courses are generally more cost-effective, and a range of scholarship opportunities are available for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. This has helped widen access to education for students across Nepal.
Furthermore, TVET is no longer viewed as a terminal pathway. Graduates now have options to pursue higher education in related fields, both within Nepal and abroad. This evolving flexibility is gradually changing public perception, positioning technical education as a viable and respectable alternative to conventional degrees.
Stakeholders in Nepal’s education and employment sectors emphasize that strengthening technical education is essential for addressing youth unemployment and supporting economic development. With increasing demand for skilled human resources in sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture modernization, and tourism, institutions like CTEVT are expected to play a crucial role in shaping a competent workforce.
As Nepal continues to navigate challenges related to employment and migration, the shift toward skill-based education signals a broader transformation in how young people prepare for their futures.
