Kathmandu - The Government of Nepal has initiated a focused effort to enhance internet service reliability and performance within Singha Durbar, the country’s central administrative hub, as part of its broader push toward strengthening digital governance.
The directive comes from the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, which has instructed the Integrated Data Management Center to take immediate and coordinated action to ensure faster, uninterrupted, and efficient internet connectivity across all government offices within the Singha Durbar premises.
During a high-level discussion held on Monday, Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Dr. Bikram Timilsina, emphasized that reliable internet service is essential for effective governance. He underlined that disruptions in connectivity cannot be tolerated under any circumstances, urging service providers and concerned agencies to remain vigilant and proactive.
The minister also highlighted the importance of identifying recurring technical issues and resolving them promptly. Stressing accountability, he called for stronger coordination among institutions, regular monitoring, and improved collaboration to ensure consistent service delivery. According to him, without robust digital infrastructure, the goal of efficient, transparent, and technology-driven public service remains unattainable.
Recognizing that both technical faults and human errors contribute to service interruptions, Minister Timilsina directed authorities to prioritize the deployment of skilled IT professionals. He further instructed that technical teams from Nepal Telecom be mobilized to respond swiftly to any disruptions.
Officials from the Integrated Data Management Center reported that while a 1 Gbps broadband connection is currently operational within Singha Durbar, supported by an additional 250 Mbps line for G-Cloud services, challenges persist. Some offices continue to experience slow internet speeds and occasional connectivity breakdowns.
According to the center’s chief, Manish Bhattarai, most service disruptions are linked to damage in optical fiber networks, often caused during road construction and infrastructure development activities. He noted that unmanaged and exposed fiber networks remain vulnerable, calling for a long-term solution through systematic underground installation.
Bhattarai also pointed out that earlier backup systems designed to maintain service continuity during outages have weakened over time and require immediate reinforcement. Additionally, while external internet infrastructure is centrally managed, internal network systems within individual ministries fall under their respective jurisdictions-highlighting the need for dedicated IT personnel in each government office.
This initiative aligns with the government’s broader objective of strengthening Nepal’s digital infrastructure and improving the efficiency of public service delivery. Ensuring reliable internet access within Singha Durbar is seen as a critical step toward enabling smoother administrative operations and advancing e-governance in the country.
