Ruby Kumari Thakur, 25, Becomes Nepal’s Deputy Speaker, Inspiring a New Generation

Kathmandu, Nepal - In a significant moment for inclusive governance and youth representation, 25-year-old Ruby Kumari Thakur has been elected as the Deputy Speaker of Nepal’s federal parliament, marking a new milestone in the country’s evolving political landscape.
Expressing her happiness and determination, Thakur stated that while the responsibility ahead is greater, she remains confident in her ability to fulfill the role. Her message has quickly gained public attention, inspiring thousands of women and young people across the country who see her rise as a symbol of opportunity and progress.
Her appointment is being widely viewed as a reflection of the inclusive principles guaranteed by Nepal’s Constitution of Nepal, which emphasizes proportional representation and the active participation of women in state mechanisms. Over the years, these constitutional provisions have opened doors for increased female leadership in key national positions.
Observers have also credited the long-standing efforts of pioneering women leaders and rights advocates who played a crucial role in ensuring women’s presence across state institutions. Thakur’s achievement stands as a continuation of that legacy, reinforcing the importance of sustained advocacy for gender equality.
At the same time, her elevation is seen as a reaffirmation of Nepal’s Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, particularly at a time when debates around the political system persist. Supporters argue that such developments highlight the system’s capacity to promote inclusion and empower younger generations.
Despite the celebratory mood, expectations from the newly appointed Deputy Speaker remain high. Political analysts stress that her upcoming tenure will be closely watched, with a focus on how effectively she upholds parliamentary integrity, inclusiveness, and public trust.
Ruby Kumari Thakur’s journey-from a young leader to one of the highest parliamentary positions-has become a powerful narrative of aspiration, signaling a hopeful direction for Nepal’s democratic future.
