User Fees Fixed for Nagdhunga Tunnel Road: Differential Charges for Entry and Exit

Kathmandu - The government has officially set user fees for vehicles operating through the Nagdhunga Tunnel Road, marking a significant step toward the operationalization of one of Nepal’s key infrastructure projects aimed at easing traffic congestion in the Kathmandu Valley.
As per the recently published Gazette, vehicles traveling through the tunnel will be charged differently depending on whether they are entering or exiting Kathmandu. The fee structure reflects vehicle categories and their relative impact on road usage and infrastructure.
Light vehicles-including cars, vans, pickups, tractors, and microbuses-will be charged NPR 65 when entering Kathmandu and NPR 60 when exiting. For medium-sized vehicles such as minibuses and mini trucks or tippers, the fee is set at NPR 115 for entry and NPR 80 for exit.
Similarly, larger vehicles like buses and trucks will pay NPR 260 when entering the capital and NPR 200 when leaving. The highest charges apply to multi-axle trucks and heavy equipment, which will be required to pay NPR 600 for entry and NPR 250 for exit.
The introduction of this fee system is expected to contribute to the maintenance and management of the tunnel infrastructure while also regulating traffic flow. The Nagdhunga Tunnel Road project, once fully operational, is anticipated to significantly reduce travel time, improve fuel efficiency, and minimize environmental pollution caused by prolonged traffic congestion along the existing highway.
However, the differential pricing between entry and exit has raised questions among transport operators and commuters, particularly regarding its economic implications and fairness. Stakeholders are likely to closely observe how the fee structure affects transportation costs and mobility patterns in the coming months.
The tunnel is considered a strategic infrastructure development for Kathmandu Valley, linking it more efficiently with the western regions of Nepal and supporting both economic activities and sustainable urban mobility.
