Kathmandu, April 2026 - The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has underscored the critical link between climate stability and the survival of life on Earth, warning that even the smallest rise in global temperatures can have far-reaching consequences for biodiversity and ecosystems.
According to UNEP’s latest Spotlight on Climate Action, the planet is facing a deepening climate emergency driven largely by carbon-intensive activities across sectors such as energy, transport, agriculture, and industry. Without significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, the world risks accelerating environmental degradation that threatens both natural systems and human livelihoods.
Scientific evidence shows that every fraction of a degree increase in global temperature matters, as it directly impacts ecosystems, species survival, and ecological balance. Rising temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns, and extreme weather events are already contributing to habitat loss and biodiversity decline worldwide.
UNEP highlights that biodiversity and climate are deeply interconnected. A stable climate supports ecosystems that provide essential services such as food, water, and clean air, while healthy ecosystems in turn help regulate the climate by absorbing carbon and maintaining environmental balance. However, the ongoing “triple planetary crisis” - climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution - is placing unprecedented pressure on the Earth’s natural systems.
The agency further stresses that addressing climate change requires transformative, cross-sectoral action, including transitioning to low-carbon energy systems, promoting nature-based solutions, and strengthening global cooperation. Public access to reliable data, science-based policies, and inclusive participation are seen as essential tools in accelerating climate action.
Importantly, UNEP calls on individuals, communities, and institutions worldwide to take part in climate initiatives by staying informed and engaging with credible environmental data and solutions. Collective action, it notes, remains key to safeguarding biodiversity and ensuring a sustainable future.
As global temperatures continue to rise, the message is clear: protecting the climate is not only an environmental priority but a fundamental necessity for preserving life on Earth.
