Road Blockade in Pokhara After Demolition Near Fewa Lake Raises Local Concerns

Pokhara, Nepal - Tension escalated along the Lakeside-Pame road in Pokhara after local residents obstructed traffic in protest against the recent demolition of structures built within a 65-meter boundary of Fewa Lake.
The blockade follows a government-led action to remove buildings and infrastructures considered to be illegally constructed within the designated buffer zone of the lake. Authorities have stated that the move aims to protect the ecological integrity of Fewa Lake, one of Nepal’s major tourist destinations and a vital natural resource.
However, the demolition has triggered dissatisfaction among local business owners and residents, many of whom argue that the decision has directly affected their livelihoods. Tourism entrepreneurs, hotel operators, and small vendors in the Lakeside area have expressed concerns over inadequate consultation and compensation.
Eyewitnesses reported large gatherings of locals, with vehicles halted and security personnel deployed to monitor the situation. While the protest remained largely non-violent, it has significantly disrupted transportation and daily activities along the busy route connecting Lakeside to Pame.
Environmental experts have long warned about unregulated construction around Fewa Lake, citing risks such as water pollution, encroachment, and ecosystem degradation. The 65-meter boundary rule is part of broader efforts to conserve the lake and maintain sustainable tourism in Pokhara.
Authorities are expected to engage in dialogue with stakeholders to address grievances and ensure that conservation measures are implemented alongside fair support mechanisms for affected communities.
The incident highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing environmental protection with economic dependency on tourism in Nepal’s rapidly developing urban hubs.
