Montréal, 30 March 2026 - In a significant step toward sustainable aviation, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council has approved a new set of stricter environmental standards that will apply to next-generation aircraft worldwide, including emerging supersonic jets.
The newly adopted measures aim to reduce both carbon emissions and aircraft noise, reinforcing global commitments to climate action while encouraging technological innovation across the aviation industry.
Stricter CO₂ Emission Standards
Under the updated framework, ICAO has strengthened its carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions standard by 10 percent for new aircraft designs, which will come into effect from 2031. Additionally, a more complex and stringent emissions requirement will be applied to in-production aircraft from 2035, ensuring that even existing models evolve toward improved environmental performance.
These changes are expected to push manufacturers toward adopting advanced fuel-efficient technologies, contributing to global efforts to curb aviation-related greenhouse gas emissions.
New Noise Reduction Limits
The ICAO Council has also introduced tighter aircraft noise standards. Large aircraft will need to meet limits that are six decibels lower, while smaller aircraft must comply with reductions of two decibels. These standards will apply to new aircraft designs from 2029.
The move is designed to minimize the impact of aviation noise on communities living near airports, addressing a longstanding environmental and public health concern.
Preparing for the Return of Supersonic Travel
Recognizing the potential return of supersonic passenger aircraft, ICAO has taken early steps to regulate their environmental impact. From 2029, new supersonic aircraft will be required to meet the same noise standards currently applied to subsonic aircraft, marking a proactive effort to integrate emerging technologies within sustainable frameworks.
Global Collaboration and Implementation Timeline
The standards are the result of years of technical analysis and global consultation led by ICAO’s environmental bodies, including the Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection. The collaborative process involved member states, industry stakeholders, and experts, ensuring that the regulations are both scientifically robust and practically feasible.
The ICAO Council has set 3 August 2026 as the effective date of adoption, with 1 January 2027 marking the start of global implementation. The organization will provide detailed guidance and documentation to support countries and manufacturers during the transition.
Toward Net-Zero Aviation
These measures align with ICAO’s long-term vision of achieving net-zero carbon emissions in international aviation by 2050. By tightening environmental standards today, ICAO aims to accelerate the development of cleaner, quieter aircraft and ensure that future air transport growth does not come at the expense of the planet.
The decision signals a decisive shift in global aviation policy-one that balances technological progress with environmental responsibility, benefiting passengers, communities, and ecosystems worldwide.
