Refresher Training Strengthens Community-Led Dolphin Conservation Efforts in Bardiya

Bardiya, Nepal | March 31, 2026
A refresher training program aimed at reinforcing community-led dolphin conservation has officially commenced in Bardiya under the coordination of the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC). The initiative, launched on March 29, is focused on enhancing the capacity and effectiveness of the Community-Based Dolphin Conservation Committee.
The training brings together local conservation actors who play a critical role in protecting endangered freshwater dolphin species, particularly in river systems surrounding Bardiya National Park and adjacent buffer zones. On the first day, 21 committee members actively participated, demonstrating strong grassroots commitment to safeguarding aquatic biodiversity.
This refresher program is designed to update participants on conservation strategies, monitoring techniques, and community engagement practices. It also aims to strengthen coordination between local stakeholders and conservation institutions, ensuring sustained protection efforts for vulnerable species such as the Gangetic river dolphin, which is listed as endangered.
Conservation experts highlight that community involvement remains central to the survival of river dolphins in Nepal. Increasing human pressures-including river pollution, habitat fragmentation, and unsustainable fishing practices-continue to threaten their population. Programs like this are seen as essential in building local ownership and long-term stewardship of river ecosystems.IMG_20260331_073405-1774921777.jpg
NTNC’s continued engagement in Bardiya reflects a broader strategy to integrate conservation awareness with practical, community-based action. By strengthening local capacity, such initiatives aim to create a safer and more sustainable future for Nepal’s freshwater biodiversity.
