  • Ride-Hailing Drivers in Nepal Launch Joint Protest Demanding Fare Reforms
Ride-Hailing Drivers in Nepal Launch Joint Protest Demanding Fare Reforms

Kathmandu, Nepal - Drivers affiliated with leading ride-hailing platforms Pathao, InDrive, and Yango have jointly staged protests in Kathmandu and other urban centers, calling for immediate revisions to fare structures and improved working conditions.
The protest marks a rare collective action among drivers across multiple digital platforms, highlighting growing dissatisfaction within Nepal’s gig economy. Demonstrators argue that current fare rates have not kept pace with rising fuel prices, vehicle maintenance costs, and overall inflation, making it increasingly difficult for drivers to sustain their livelihoods.
Participants in the protest reported that commission fees charged by ride-hailing companies, combined with relatively low passenger fares, have significantly reduced their daily earnings. Many drivers claim they are working longer hours while earning less than before, raising concerns about financial insecurity and job sustainability in the sector.
The protesting drivers have put forward key demands, including a scientific adjustment of fare rates based on operational costs, reduction in platform commission percentages, and greater transparency in pricing algorithms. They have also called for clearer government regulation to ensure fair competition and protect workers' rights in Nepal’s rapidly expanding digital transport industry.
Urban mobility experts note that while ride-hailing services have transformed transportation accessibility in cities like Kathmandu, regulatory frameworks have struggled to keep pace with the sector’s rapid growth. The absence of standardized fare policies and labor protections has contributed to recurring disputes between drivers and platform companies.
As negotiations remain uncertain, the protests could disrupt daily commuting for thousands of passengers who rely on app-based rides. Authorities have yet to announce any formal mediation efforts, but pressure is mounting for both government bodies and companies to engage in dialogue with drivers.
The situation underscores a broader global challenge: balancing innovation in digital mobility with fair labor practices and sustainable income models for gig workers.
