Community Forestry Success in Nepal Gains Global Attention on World Forest Day

Kathmandu - On the occasion of World Forest Day, Nepal’s community-led forest management model has once again drawn global recognition as a powerful example of environmental restoration and grassroots governance.
According to recent data, Nepal has increased its forest cover from 29 percent in 1994 to over 46 percent in 2022-one of the most remarkable forest recovery achievements in the world. This progress has largely been attributed to decades of community-based forest management, where local user groups play a central role in conserving and sustainably utilizing forest resources.
The World Bank Group, in its report titled May the Forest Be with You, highlights Nepal’s success while also cautioning against emerging challenges. The report presents a detailed subnational analysis across all 753 municipalities, along with the first nationally representative assessment of household dependency on forests.
Despite notable gains, experts warn that forest fragmentation and gradual degradation are increasingly undermining progress. These issues pose serious risks to biodiversity, watershed systems, and the livelihoods of millions who depend directly on forest ecosystems for fuel, fodder, and income.
The report emphasizes that sustainable forest management will be critical in the coming years-not only to preserve ecological gains but also to generate green jobs, strengthen local economies, and enhance climate resilience.
As Nepal marks World Forest Day, the country stands at a crucial crossroads: to build on its globally admired community forestry model while addressing the new and complex challenges threatening its forests.
