Record Forest Loss in 2024 Raises Global Alarm

Kathmandu | Ecosphere News
Global forest ecosystems are facing an alarming crisis as new data reveals unprecedented levels of destruction in 2024. According to analysis from the World Resources Institute and its Global Forest Watch platform, the world lost approximately 6.7 million hectares of tropical primary forest in a single year-marking the highest recorded loss in recent history.
This scale of deforestation is equivalent to 18 football fields disappearing every minute, underscoring the rapid pace at which vital ecosystems are vanishing.
Forests: The Backbone of Life and Livelihoods
Forests are not just collections of trees-they are essential systems that sustain life on Earth. As highlighted in a recent awareness campaign by United Nations Development Programme, healthy forests play a crucial role in:
Supporting food systems
Ensuring water security
Sustaining local livelihoods
Preserving biodiversity
Maintaining climate stability
Globally, an estimated 1.6 billion people depend directly on forests for their livelihoods, making their loss not only an environmental issue but also a socio-economic crisis.
Fires and Climate Change Drive Destruction
Unlike previous years where agriculture was the primary driver, forest fires emerged as the leading cause of forest loss in 2024, accounting for nearly half of the destruction.
Experts attribute this shift to:
Intensifying climate change
Severe drought conditions
Increased human-induced fires
These fires not only destroy forests but also release massive amounts of carbon dioxide, further accelerating global warming and weakening the planet’s natural carbon sinks.
A Global Warning
Environmental experts have described the situation as a “global red alert,” warning that current trends are far off track from international commitments to halt deforestation by 2030.
The continued loss of tropical primary forests-critical reservoirs of carbon and biodiversity-poses serious risks to global climate goals, ecosystem stability, and human well-being.
The Way Forward
The crisis highlights the urgent need for:
Stronger forest protection policies
Investment in community-based conservation
Promotion of nature-based economies
Global cooperation to combat climate change
Without immediate and sustained action, the world risks losing one of its most vital natural defenses against environmental and economic instability.
